Cardiac Rehabilitation Employment
When we think of the term cardiac rehabilitation employment, it does not mean employment for those who are qualified as doctors or nurses. This field also offers employment opportunities for paramedical and other health care professionals, psychologists, helpers, exercise trainers, technicians, and so on. Some of these professions might mandate a candidate to have a cardiac rehabilitation internship, while in other professions; this may be just an added benefit.
The brief introduction of job responsibilities of some of them is as follows:
- Surgeon:
Though the surgeon is not directly involved in the procedure of rehabilitation he is considered as the part of rehab team as he operates the patient in critical stage and helps him to get recovery faster. The person has to be Master of Doctor in Surgery for pursuing this post. The cardiac rehab team members may be guided by this surgeon.
- Physician:
The physician may be a general practitioner with loads of experience or a Master of Doctor with specialization as cardiac treatment. The physician is the first person to whom the patient approaches after having a heart trouble. He is the one who decides the line of treatment for the patient. The role of a physician is very important in the cardiac rehab treatment.
- Cardiac Nurse and Helpers:
These are the medical professionals who help the physicians and surgeons in the rehab process. The nurse has to assure that the medicines are being taken on time along with the proposed diet. The nurse also ensures that there is no reaction of any medicine on the patient. Helpers are the people who assist the cardiac nurse in his work. They sponge the bed ridden patient. In order to specialize as a cardiac rehabilitation nurse, you should have a Bachelor in Nursing or an Associate Degree in Nursing. You can pursue such courses in several accredited nursing schools, and then pass the NCLEX-RN exam. You need to practice at least two years as a general nurse before you specialize in cardiac rehabilitation.
- Dietitian:
The dietitian is a professional who designs a perfect balanced diet for the cardiac patient taking into account various factors like, the cardiac disease he is suffering from, allergies etc. The dietitian is responsible for making a diet chart for the heart patients that has to be followed when the patient is undergoing or has recently undergone treatment for heart related ailments. The dietitians counsel the patients to eat healthy food. They also guide patients so that continue to eat healthy food in the long run. This helps in maintaining their health and keeping their cholesterol level, blood pressure and other disease in control. When patients eat healthy and nutritious diet, they are less likely to have health related problems because of food.
- Psychiatrist:
Though the patient does not have any mental disability, he is under tremendous mental shock after the heart attack. A good healthy round of discussion with psychologist helps the patient to retrieve his self confidence. The patient is also given the assurance that after going through the rehab process, he can recuperate very well and start a normal life. The person who wants to pursue this position at least must be a registered psychotherapist.
- Cardiac Exercise Specialist:
This is a special exercise trainer who teaches different types of cardiac exercises to the patient. These exercises help improving the efficiency of the heart to pump blood. They help in increasing the endurance of the patients, and thereby their general health. By improving this ability, the patient can regain its ability to sustain physical and mental stress situations. To be a cardiac exercise specialist, a person should pass a certificate diploma in cardiac exercise from a recognized center.
- Cardiac Rehab Machine Operators:
These are the semi technical professionals who assist the doctors, exercise trainers and patients in operating the cardiac tests, exercise and rehab machines like ECG machine, mechanical cycle and walker, Sugar level machine etc. For working in this position, a person must know how to operate these machines in depth.
The cardiac rehabilitation employers look for professionals that not only have a degree, but also some experience in their field. If you are a fresher in their field, it will be good to have a cardiac rehabilitation internship after you complete your degree, diploma or certification. As more number of people complains of a heart problem every year, the job prospects in this field look quite promising.
