Animal rehabilitation center

Animals (pets) have been known to humanity for time eternal. Both animals and pets are equally important in each other's life. Just like human beings, animals too face injuries or disorders and need to recover. Animal rehabilitation centers are the answer to their need for rehabilitative care. It's the best way for humans to show their dedicated love and care to its friend from time far behind.

Animal rehabilitation center is the treatment center where the knowledge of a veterinary doctor meets the skills of a physiotherapist. Both work together for a common goal of animal rehabilitation. The purpose of an animal rehabilitation center is to provide comprehensive animal rehabilitation care to pets and other wildlife. Several techniques are used in pet rehab for achieving different goals. The main goals of pet rehabilitation are improving endurance and agility, and speeding up recovery from injury.

Animal Rehabilitation Program

Just like for humans, animals too require a comprehensive rehabilitation program. A holistic rehabilitation program for animals too involves following diagnostic approaches:

  • Diagnosis evaluation
  • Medical history review and analysis
  • Lifestyle (occupational analysis)
  • Nutrition
  • Medication and treatment (including therapies)
  • Use of technological advancements for increased efficiency
  • Reintegration (with community or wild)

Legal concerns

In many countries, such as United States, Australia; it is illegal to practice animal rehabilitation without license or permit. To keep wildlife at hole without permission from federal authority is illegal and can call for legal action. So, everyone is advised that on finding an injured animal or wild life they should take it to nearest veterinary doctor or animal rehabilitation center. In United States, to rehabilitate animals, one needs to get permission from federal and respective state authorities. "United States Fish and Wildlife Service" is the federal authority giving permission for the same.

Rehabilitation process

The process of animal rehabilitation begins with when someone finds an injured, orphaned wildlife or at times when it is apprehended from poachers/traders/hunters. As far as possible, one should avoid excessively handling the wildlife. Too much of human touch or intrusion can cause stress to wildlife. As a result they can inflict harm to both of them. The founded wildlife should be taken to nearest veterinary or rehabilitation center. It is advisable to call and inform before taking animal to clinic / center. This will give doctors additional time to keep provisions ready for delivering immediate treatment.

Once treated, the animal is moved to rehabilitation or recovery unit. In this unit various physical therapies are administered to help animal to regain its original mobility. Once fit to feed by self and thrive independently, the animals are released back to their natural habitats where they belong.

If the animal is not fit enough to live by itself, then it is moved to facilities where they can be taken care for lifetime such as zoo etc. Such animals can also be used for educational programs or kept by individual as pet subject to fulfillment of required formalities.

Baby season

Animal rehabilitation centers are comparatively busier during baby season than rest of the season. It is because in this season, more offspring's are born and they tend to be lost in wild or get injured. The period generally starts in October and lasts up to March. Animal rehabilitation centers during the period require additional supplies and more volunteers to provide effective rehabilitation treatment.

Understanding that every animal is unique and so requires individualized treatment programs, animal rehabilitation center are taking all steps to bridge the gap. Animal rehabilitation centers too paralleling with the advancements in human healthcare are striving hard to provide quality, standardized and comprehensive rehabilitation care to our pets and animals.
