Brain injury rehabilitation center

Brain injuries are traumatic in nature and can cause lifetime disabilities. A competitive and efficient Brain injury rehabilitation program is necessary for successful recovery from any traumatic brain injury. A Brain injury rehabilitation center is the ideal place to find one of such programs.

Traumatic brain injury centers

The role of Brain injury rehabilitation center comes in the second phase of traumatic brain injury recovery. There are 3 kinds of traumatic brain injury center:

  1. Acute hospitals
  2. Rehabilitation and Therapy centers
  3. Post Acute Rehabilitation Centers

Patients who suffer brain injuries are required to be taken to a trauma care center where the initial treatment is provided. These patients are commonly admitted in ICU (intensive care unit) of a hospital. Post treatment, once the patient is stabilized; he is moved to a rehab treatment center for recovery from traumatic shocks of injury suffered.

Rehabilitation and Therapy centers

A stabilized patient from ICU when moved into a rehabilitation center is looked upon by a team of medical experts who are specialized in traumatic brain injury recovery.

A rehabilitation center provides some, all or a combination of therapies to patients such as physical therapies, counseling, speech and language therapies, cognitive therapies etc. As these centers play a vital part in recovery of a patient, they need to be certified by appropriate governing authority. In US, CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) exercises the discretionary power to certify a rehabilitation facility.

Some of the certified Brain injury rehabilitation centers in US are mentioned below:

Types of Brain Injury Rehabilitation:

Depending upon the injury suffered, there are two kinds of rehabilitation programs:

  • Cognitive traumatic brain injury rehabilitation
  • Physical traumatic brain injury rehabilitation

Cognitive program is designed to recover from various impaired brain functions such as memory, speech, concentration, planning, decision making, judgment, identification, reasoning and behavior. All these impairments depend upon the extent of damage from mild to moderate and severe.

Physical traumatic brain injury program is continuation of cognitive program to physical attributes for daily mundane activities such as balance, limb movements and motion co-ordination.

Types of rehabilitation programs

The rehabilitation required by a traumatic brain injury patient depends widely upon the extent of injury suffered and recovery path required.

The options depend upon the rehabilitation programs provided by Brain Injury Rehabilitation centers such as:

  • Home based rehabilitation programs
  • Inpatient hospital rehabilitation programs
  • Hospital outpatient rehabilitation programs
  • Day care programs
  • School based programs for children
  • Others

It's always recommended that a traumatic brain injury survivor should receive a personal customized program concentrating on specific areas of rehabilitation. However, the selection of appropriate rehabilitation program and the brain injury rehabilitation center depends upon the patient, the rehabilitation team, family and other circumstances like location and financial status etc.
