It is now the largest inpatient rehabilitation hospital in the state of Maryland. Kernan rehabilitation center was founded by brothers Dr. R. Tunstall Taylor and Robertson Taylor in 1895. With many mergers and acquisitions, through the course of time, Kernan rehabilitation center has grown to become the only CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facility) accredited hospital in the field of Spinal Cord System of Care, Brain Injury, Stroke Specialty Hospital, and Comprehensive Integrated Inpatient Rehabilitation.
Kernan rehabilitation center with its growing importance and contribution, has become a University Teaching Hospital, and has been owned by University of Maryland since 1986. Ever since, it has developed into a multi-disciplinary rehabilitation service provider in Orthopaedics for both children and adults. Kernan rehabilitation center is proud to be among the 5 rehab treatment centers of Maryland with licensed beds. Presently it has four units, each with 32 bed capacity providing inpatient rehabilitation services.
