Alkyl Nitrites

Alkyl nitrites are a group of chemicals that includes Butyl Nitrite, Amyl Nitrite and Isobutyl Nitrite. These chemicals re refined using nitrous oxide, otherwise these are used as fuel injectors in street racing cars.

Alkyl Nitrites Since the mid of 1800, these have been used in medicine to relieve the symptoms of anginas by the process of blood vessels dilating so that the blood is delivered to the heart.

The more precise technology in medicine replaces the amyl nitrite and the lower potency butyl nitrite is frequently found for sale as poppers.

Alkyl nitrites are generally available in small bottles with screw tops or plug tops. The liquid begins to evaporate into air as soon as the lid is taken off. So it is kept in an airtight corrosion proof glass container.

It is clear or slightly yellow liquid with a sweet smell when fresh. These are easily available at various clubs, bars and sold under the brand names like TNT, Rush, Ram etc.

To use this liquid, the small bottle is opened and held near the nose. The gases evaporating from the liquid are breathed in and held in lungs for sometime. Exhaling triggers the full rush, as the effect begins.

It is widely used as dance enhancer on the club circuit but it can also be used as sexual stimulant and a muscle relaxant. It is directly inhaled from the bottle and after inhaled, effect lasts for 2 to 5 minutes.

Short-term effects of Alkyl Nitrites

  • Flushed face and neck
  • Brief, intense head-rush, sometimes causing light-headedness and a feeling that time has slowed
  • Pounding headache
  • Relaxes anal muscles
  • Effects fade after two to five minutes
  • Feeling faint and sick
  • Possibility of losing consciousness
  • Has been fatal when swallowed
  • If spilled, can burn the skin
  • pressure or breathing problems
  • Dangerous for people with glaucoma, anemia, low blood
Long-term effects of Alkyl Nitrites
  • Skin problems around the mouth and nose can be caused by habitual use.
  • Tolerance develops with continuous use over two to three weeks
  • No evidence of dependence or longer-term damage
