Amphetamines

Amphetamines comes under the group of drugs called psychostimulants. This group covers several similar substances like dexamphetamine, amphetamine sulphate and methamphetamine. They stimulate the central nervous system and accelerate the messages going to and from the brain to the body.

Primary effect of Amphetamines Many amphetamines are produced in backyard laboratories and sold illegally. Many people purchase this drug illegally, with it they also buy other substances which are harmful or unpleasant to human body.

Amphetamines are made from an oil base. These are found in various forms such as tablets, powder, crystals, capsules and red liquid. The most common form is for the oil to be converted into a powder. And then powder may be converted into capsules or tablets.

Amphetamines come in white as well as brown powder, sometimes even in dark purple and orange. They have bitter taste and strong smell. Amphetamine tablets are found in various color and can be cocktail of drugs, caffeine, binding agents and sugar.

Amphetamine capsules are also of different colors and sometimes sold in commercial brand shells. These are packed in plastic bags, aluminum foil and in small balloons when sold on street.

Metamphetamine generally comes in large rock like crystals or as a liquid methamphetamine. This is similar to amphetamine in structure and is more pure and longer lasting.

Amphetamines can be injected, smoked or swallowed. They also sniffed or snorted through the nose. Some people insert them anally called shafting.

Effects of amphetamines

Primary effect of amphetamine is to speed up the activity of the nervous system and brain. The user experiences increased energy, confidence and more alertness as his heart and breathing rate increases. Appetite may become excited and talkative and may be suppressed.

Intermediate effects of amphetamine include irritability, anxiety, and heart palpitations. At higher doses it cause headaches, panic attacks, dizziness ad heartbeat.

Heavy doses of amphetamine can lead to malnutrition and insomnia. Also there are possibilities of some psychological problems such as paranoia, depression and extreme aggressiveness. Also it can cause stroke, seizure, heart attack, coma and finally death.

To recover from the amphetamine addiction there are various treatment options available. Some treatment options include group therapy, counseling, medication, withdrawal. Also there are residential and out patient programs available.

  • Common street names for amphetamines are Speed, uppers, whiz, goey, louee

  • Solid methamphetamine is known as Meth, whiz, speed, fast, goey, uppers, louee, tail, rabbit, pep pills, pure, base, point or wax.

  • Liquid methamphetamine is known as ox blood, Leopard's blood, red speed or liquid red

  • Crystal methamphetamine is also known as ice, meth, shabu, batu, d-meth, crystal meth, or glass.
