Cannabis is a depressant drug that comes from the flowers, leaves, and seed of the cannabis indica and cannabis sativa plants. THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) is the active chemical or psychotropic ingredient in cannabis.

Cannabis is generally available in three different forms:

  • Marijuana is the dried leaves and flowers of the cannabis plant and is the most common and least powerful form of cannabis. It looks like chopped grass, color ranging from grey green to greenish brown. It is smoked in a pipe or a hand rolled cigarettes.

  • Hashish is the dried cannabis resign available in small blocks. The block color ranges from dark brown to black. It has a higher concentration of THC and produces stronger effects. It is added in tobacco and then smokes or also baked in hash cookies and eaten.

  • Hash oil is the most powerful form of cannabis. It is a thick, oil liquid extracted from hashish. It is first spread on paper or tip of cigarettes and then smokes. It is rarely found in Australia.

Effects of cannabis

Cannabis is a depressant which contain some mild hallucinogenic properties. It slows down the activity of the central nervous system. The effects of cannabis vary from person to person depending on various factors like individual's size, weight, health and how and how much the drug is taken.

Immediate effects of Cannabis

Small doses of cannabis can have effects that last 2 to 4 hours after smoking. Below is the listing of immediate effects of cannabis.

  • increased appetite
  • affected thinking and memory.
  • relaxation and loss of inhibition
  • impaired coordination
  • affected perception of sound, color and other sensations

Apart from these there are some other common immediate effects such as low blood pressure, increased heart rate, and reddened eyes.

Short-term Effects of Cannabis

If the cannabis is taken in large quantities, then the above mentioned effects may get stronger. Very large amount of cannabis can produce:

  • restlessness
  • confusion
  • hallucinations
  • feelings of excitement
  • decreased reaction time
  • paranoia
  • detachment from reality or anxiety or panic

Long-term effects of Cannabis

Some long term effects found in regular cannabis users. These are:

  • reduced motivation
  • respiratory illness
  • affect production of hormones
  • brain function
  • immune system

Some common street names of cannabis include grass, hash, pot, dope, reefer, herb, buddha, mull, ganja, stick, joint, buckets, skunk, cones, hydro, yarndi, weed, smoke, and hooch.
