Drug Rehabilitation Counseling

Drug rehabilitation counseling is a process in which the patient and counselor sit face to face to discuss the problems faced by the patient. Today, counseling is also done through the internet, video conferencing, etc. It always uses a positive and supportive approach which will help a patient to come out of shell and express his or her innermost feelings. Counseling works well if sufficient time is given. A counselor has to show empathy towards a patient and also be a good listener. A healthy and friendly environment has to be created so that a patient feels free to express his or her thoughts during the drug rehab program. Counseling helps in solving psychological problems, addiction problems, etc. A lot of therapies and approaches are used in counseling.

Before a patient starts with a drug rehab program, the drug rehabilitation counselor understands the need of a patient and also the kind of problems an addict is facing. This helps a counselor plan the course of treatment for the patient. The counselor strives to find the cause that lead patients towards addiction, and encourages them to strive hard to break free of their addiction.

Drug Rehabilitation Counseling

For a very long time, people thought that drug addiction could only be cured by providing medical treatment. This was based on an assumption that substance abuse was a medical treatment. People slowly realized that many people consume drugs when they are depressed, or want to get away from some problem. Counselors try to probe the problem at the grass root level to find out why patients became addicts in the first place. Then they try to help these patients regain their lost confidence so that they go back into the society as normal individuals, and shed their inhibitions.

When the addict gets ready to enter a rehabilitation center then he /she has to undergo detoxification as the first step of treatment; a counselor helps these patients to take this first but important step. Once that is done, therapies and medication is given to recover. Along with that, counseling is given to the addict. Counseling helps the addict in understanding how he or she started with drug abuse which later turned into addiction. The root cause is addressed in counseling. After that the focus shifts to how the addict has to change his or her life style to be completely free from addiction.

Types of Drug Rehabilitation Counseling

Counseling helps an individual to change his or her thinking and gives confidence to make right decision. This support gives the addicts a new lease of life. Counseling is done in three ways. They are as follows:

  • Individual Counseling: In this type of counseling the patient and the counselor meet for a one-on-one session. The sessions of this type are private and last for an hour or so. The counselor through discussion tries to reach at the root cause of addiction. Together, they find ways to come out of the addiction and how one has to control the urge. The talk also focuses on how to make right decisions. The client is given an opportunity to speak his or her heart out.

  • Group Counseling: In group counseling, the patients get a chance to share their experiences and views with the fellow patients. This is an opportunity of peer learning and the addicts understand various ways in which one can recover. A lot of support is provided to each other in these sessions. This session helps the patients to come out of isolation and discuss their issues with the people who have gone through these problems. This is a great relief for them and a lot of patients speak intensely their innermost feelings to the fellow patients. They realize that there are many others like them who suffer from the same problem, but can one day lead a normal life again.

  • Family Counseling: Family counseling too plays an effective role in the recovery of the patient. When there is a drug addict in the family, the entire family suffers. In this session, all the family members are involved. The discussion focuses on how they can support the addict during his or her rehabilitation and post recovery and how their love and care can have a positive impact on the addict. Family's support can be a breakthrough for the patients.

In all these types of counseling, positive attitude of the patient plays a significant role. If a patient is determined to recover, it helps a lot in the process of counseling. The patient has to participate in group counseling and should express him or herself. Ready to adjust and adapt to the counseling can improve the chances of recovery. Drug rehabilitation counseling helps if the patient takes full interest in the process. When parents find signs of teenage drug addiction, they can also seek the help of these counselors not just to help their kids, but also to know how to handle them. So counselors are very important part of a rehab program.
