Ecstasy

Ecstasy is the name of the drugs, which are similar in the chemical structure to MDMA (methylenedioxymethamphetamine) and affect to amphetamines and (in high doses) hallucinogens. Some of these include PMA, MDEA and MDA.

Ecstasy Hallucinogens like LSD, typically affect senses and can cause things to appear distorted or things that doesn't exist to be heard or seen. Amphetamines like speed are the stimulants, which accelerates the activity in the nervous system.

Ecstasy drug can be classified with the family of synthetic drugs known as phenethylamines. Ecstasy usually comes in tablet form and sometimes as capsules, in different sizes, colors, shapes and designs. These tablets may contain varying mixtures of MDMA, related drugs and the other substances.

Most of the ecstasy tablets are fake and contain little or no MDMA. In the original form, ecstasy is white ad bitter tasting oil. Tablets may be crushed to give the appearance of a powder.

Similar to the other illegal drugs like speed, there are no controls on the factors like hygiene and strength of the drug. That may lead to the problems such as being poisoned, overdosing, or experiencing adverse reactions after taking drug.

Effects of ecstasy

Immediate effects

Most of the people have experienced following effects after taking ecstasy:

  • feelings of well being
  • increase in confidence
  • feelings of closeness to others and so the name love drug
  • dilated pupils
  • anxiety
  • teeth grinding
  • jaw clenching
  • increased heart rate, BP and body temperature
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea
  • sweating
Higher doses effects

Higher dosage of ecstasy may cause:

  • vomiting
  • convulsions (fits)
  • floating sensations
  • hallucinations
  • irrational or bizarre behavior
Overdose can be occurred from ecstasy. It is usually characterized by very high blood pressure and body temperature, an elevated heartbeat and hallucinations. This can be harmful for the people who are already having heart and breathing problems and the people with psychological disorder and depression.

It is very difficult to determine the exact number of deaths occurred due to ecstasy abuse. The toxic effects of ecstasy which may lead to death include:

  • brain hemorrhage
  • heart attack
  • kidney failure
  • blood clotting
Treatment options for Ecstasy

Number of treatment options available, out if that abstinence may be a suitable treatment for some people. Many programs implement policy that has the in general aim of reducing the risks and harms related to the use of drug. Some of the treatment options include withdrawal, counseling and pharmacotherapy. Also there are out patient and residential programs available.
