Rehabilitation ActThe rehabilitation act forbids the discrimination according to the disability in the programs, which are conducted by Federal agencies in Federal employment, in programs receiving Federal financial assistance and in the employment practices of Federal contractors.The employment discrimination standards under the rehabilitation act are similar to the standards used in the title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Section 501 Section 501 requires nondiscrimination and affirmative action in employment by Federal agencies of the executive branch. To file a complaint or to obtain more information employees should contact their agency's Equal Employment Opportunity Office. Section 502 Section 502 of the rehabilitation law created the Access Board. Originally, it was named as Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board. Section 502 put the duties of the Board under ABA. These duties included, are: developing and maintaining guidelines on which the standards are based, ensuring compliance with standards issued under the ABA, and promoting access throughout all segments of society. Section 503 Section 503 of rehabilitation act needs affirmation action and forbids employment discrimination by Federal government contractors as well as subcontractors with contracts of more than $10,000. Section 504 Section 504 of the rehabilitation act states that "no qualified individual with a disability in the United States shall be excluded from, denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under" any activity or program that is conducted by any Executive agency or receives Federal financial assistance or the United States Postal Service. Every Federal agency has its own set of regulations for section 504, which are applied to its own programs. There are agencies which provide Federal financial assistance, also have regulations of section 504 that receive Federal aid. The common requirements to these regulations are program accessibility; reasonable accommodation for employees with disabilities; accessible new construction and alterations and effective communication with people who have hearing or vision disabilities. Section 508 The section 508 of rehabilitation act establishes requirements for information and electronic technology developed, produced, maintained, or used by the government of Federal. Also it requires Federal information and electronic technology to be easily approachable to the people having disabilities including public members and employees. |
