Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services

As the name suggests, "Florida Department of Health And Rehabilitative Services" is a department of Florida State which deals with the issues related to the public health and rehabilitation. The department controls all related activities in the State. The department operates over 27 regional Children medical examination offices and 67 County Health Departments. It is a division of the National Health Department.

The department was first established in legislative 1996 session of the state government in order to separate the "Health Department". The decision was made because of the increasing burden on the health department. The mission statement of the department was decided as "to protect and promote the health and safety of all the residents of the State of Florida; through the establishment and maintenance of the highest quality of medical aids and rehabilitation services possible"

The department undertakes many programs related to general health and rehabilitation. They educate the people about balanced diet, basic cleanliness and different diseases & health irregularities. The department arranges many free medical camps such as blood sugar check, diabetes detection, blood pressure checkup etc. to help the financially poor people to get quality medical services. The department also controls the medicine rates in the state. People are made aware about the danger signs of the diseases like heart disease. The students are given training in school about how to handle the emergency medical situations and what are the first aids which can be performed.

The department also works toward making people aware about the different rehabilitation services available for different diseases like cardiac rehab, spinal cord injury rehab, brain injury rehabilitation etc. The needy people are also given the recommendation letters for getting the sponsorship for their rehabilitation procedure. The people are educated against the hazardous side effects of smoking, drinking and doing drugs. The constant efforts from the department have shown tremendous positive results in the state. The mortality rate because of cardiac arrest has decreased considerably in last 5 years and the number of cases admitting to rehab centers in florida for the rehab procedure and getting rehabilitated successfully are increasing.
