A physical rehabilitation service is a service available to patients who are trying to recover from their physical malfunction. The reasons like illness, fractures, prolonged bed rest and stroke can lead to problem in the easy functioning of some body part. Physical therapy mainly focuses on general strengthening, gait, balance skills and mobility to help patients return home or advance to the next level of rehabilitation. In the rehab procedure, there are three phases of rehabilitation. In phase 1, the orthopedic surgeon operates on the body part which has the problem. The physician suggests some tests to be performed. Based on the results of these tests, the physician suggests medicines which include different tablets, saline and lotions for fast healing. After the initial part of the medicinal treatment is over, the patient is forwarded to the rehabilitation team. In Phase one, the physical rehabilitation expert approaches the patient and explains the brief flow of the rehab procedure. A special physical exercise trainer is introduced to the patient for teaching some helpful exercises without giving too much stress on the body part. In Phase one the exercise specialist is supposed to help the patient to do exercise.

After the patient is given discharge from the hospital, the Phase 2 of the rehab process starts. This is the phase where the patient has to either approach the rehab center as and when asked; or he can choose to adopt for a residential course at the rehab center. The patient and his family are allowed to choose this, according to their constraint. In either case, the patient is given a timetable with slots which he has to follow. He has to do daily exercises as advised by the trainer. When the patient comes to the rehab center he is given treatment with various techniques like massage, acupuncture, acupressure, water therapy, herbal treatment etc. These techniques help the patient to recover fast compared to natural healing process. In the severe cases like backbone injury or cervical spondylosis, even in the Phase two the patient is required to do exercise under the virtue of the physical rehab exercise trainer.

In the Phase three, the intensity of the exercise and time for which the exercise is to be performed are gradually increased. This helps the patient in getting back the strength of the injured part and hence returning to normal life. The special orthopedic physician is constantly into the picture of physical rehabilitation process as he adjusts the medicinal dosage according to the improvement seen on weekly or biweekly basis.
