Sports Injury RehabilitationInjuries are integral part of any sport activities, and just like the game the rehabilitation of sports injuries also needs similar attention, to ensure long term performance achievement. These injuries can be caused during various activities like exercising, training, daily activities, and accidents. Injuries can also be caused by improper training practices or using inappropriate equipment or people with malign intentions.
No matter how injuries are caused, they all require an effective rehabilitation. Sports injury rehabilitation is as important as treating any other body ailment. Some very common sports injuries are:
Rehabilitation of sports injuries: The rehabilitation of any sports injuries involves regular exercise and persistent efforts. Any rehabilitation procedure goes through following stages. Spot Treatment: The prevention and immediate rehabilitation of sports injuries is vital for successful recovery. As a first aid, on the spot treatment it's advised to follow RICE procedure. RICE is acronym for Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevate. It's applicable only to injuries sustained in accidents. This helps in immediate relief from pain, control swelling, and accelerates the healing process. Other methods for immediate temporary relief include use of pain killers or pain relievers and reduction in movement by bandaging or applying any other source of external pressure. Identification: The next step is to identify the actual type and cause of injury. This is known as diagnosis. Very often it happens that perceived cause is different from the actual cause of injury. For example, while jumping an athlete sustains injury and there is swelling near ankle. Now, initial judgment can be that swelling is caused by sprain and we may tend to massage the area. However, it may also have been caused due to minor fracture in ankle bone. In the secondary cause, doing massage would have proved harmful. So it's always recommended to identify actual nature of injury and its degree of aggravation. Only then should a treatment be administered. Treatment: Once the injury has been diagnosed, then the treatment can be successfully administered. But, caution should be exercised that in an urge for speedy recovery we do not hasten up to complicated measures immediately. Like in the above case, suitable ankle injury exercises needs to be administered but only after a proper diagnosis. Sports injury rehabilitation is a slow and steady process and it needs to be given its natural healing time for successful recovery. Ideal way is to start with minor simple exercises as at this nascent stage, more emphasis is given to promoting healing and reduce pain. At later stages, more strenuous exercises can be undertaken depending upon the requirement.
For the effectiveness of sports injury rehabilitation, it's always recommended to educate the athletes about nature of their injuries and precautions they need to take. This would help both physical trainer and athlete to work in synchronization, boost the rehabilitation speed, and make it more effective. A strict adherence and compliance of programs designed for rehabilitation of sports injuries will ensure the successful and quick recovery. Always remember, "Any work done in haste is a waste". |
