Teen Drug Abuse Signs

Teen addiction is not only limited to drug abuse, alcohol addiction is more common in teens today than ever before due to peer pressure or the strong wish to escape. Teens use drugs for many reasons, including curiosity, to reduce stress, because it feels good, to feel grown up or to fit in.

Many teens take alcohol to impress others. Unfortunately, they are unaware of the emotional, physical and psychological consequences they have to face due to alcohol abuse.

Teenagers may be involved with legal as well as illegal drugs in many ways. Drug experimentation is more common during teenage period.

The signs of teenage drug addiction are many and varied. Few signs of drug abuse are difficult to recognize from the normal behavior of the adolescent. So just because a teen demonstrates some of the signs does not necessarily mean that a teen has the addiction of drug.

The signs of drug abusing teen can be watched in home or family life, in school, academia as well as in social life. Here are some physical warning signs regarding teen drug abuse:

  • changes friends
  • unexplainable mood swings and behavior
  • smell of alcohol or marijuana on breath or body
  • over-reacts to criticism acts rebellious
  • negative, paranoid or confused, argumentative, anxious, destructive
  • sharing few if any of their personal problems
  • overly tired or hyperactive
  • sloppiness in appearance
  • doesn't seem as happy as they used to be
  • drastic weight loss or gain
  • cheats, steals
  • unhappy and depressed
  • always needs money, or has excessive amounts of money
In the society, a vibrant, dependable, responsible and socially outgoing teenager acts withdrawn and uninterested in interaction and communication with all his older friends and social activities is virtually inexplicable.

In the school, missing homework, dropping grades, absences or unexplained tardiness, verbal or physical abuse directed toward peers or teachers are all the signs of a possible teen drug addiction.

In teen, the drug addiction can cause:

  • poor personal hygiene
  • increased lethargy
  • depression
  • mood swings
  • severe weight loss or gain
  • hypersensitivity
  • hostility to criticisms

If you find any of these signs in your teen, then it may be the time to talk to your teen about drugs and their hazards.
